Who's Making Money

Blogger Andrew Trench recently presented a theory on the threshold of when Internet penetration starts to matter, writing:

Social networks have also been given plenty of credit for the revolution unfolding in Egypt.

So I went and had a look at the numbers over on www.internetworldstats.com to see what they could tell us about these two scenarios. Well, fascinatingly, both Egypt and Tunisia have seen a massive growth in internet users and internet penetration over the last 10 years.

Both have now got internet penetration of over 20% and in Tunisia's case it was as high as 34%.

While it is clearly simplistic to over-state this factor and there must be many more drivers contributing to such a rapid political uprising, it is obviously a factor as evidenced by the Egyptian regime pulling the plug on the country's internet access to try and block the rising tide of revolt.

My back-of-napkin theory is this: that a rapid increase in internet penetration in a repressive regime does play an important role as it provides an unfettered channel of communication allowing disaffected citizens to share views - and more importantly - to rapidly organise and mobilise.

If Egypt and Tunisia are valid case studies, it looks like internet penetration of around 20% is the mark.

Geopolitics & Macroeconomics adds:

Internet penetration: Social networking sites were critical to sustaining the momentum in the recent protests. The internet penetration in Egypt is 16%. In Libya, it is a meagre 5% [1]. The unrest in Libya has thus far remained concentrated in regions that are geographically distant from the seat of ‘real' power (see more on this below). The dependence of momentum on internet communication is far greater in Libya than in Egypt where protests began in Cairo itself.

Taking the conversation to Pakistan, Sabene Saigol writes, on BrandRepublic:

Perhaps one reason for this is that we're still not that used to communicating via the ‘net - maybe we need greater broadband and internet penetration. Personally I think it is more to do with culture - while Pakistani internet users are savvy to using social media to connect with friends, I feel they have not yet ‘crossed over' to seeing SM as a means for professional communications - or even wider social communications that go beyond their immediate circle. Yes, there are no doubt savvy people - both within marketing and tech circles, and outside - however, these people are likely a tiny proportion of the total number of ‘net and social media users.

For Apple, the mobile market is a cash cow. The company’s iPhone and iPad are proving to be the top mobile companions for people around the globe. Apple has sold over 100 million iPhones. Its iPad sales have hit 15 million. The company understands the mobile market and it knows how to capitalize on it.

But what about the living room? It has the Apple TV, sure, and the Mac mini is often times connected to an HDTV, but what else has Apple done to push the envelope in the living room? It still hasn’t launched the long-rumored television we keep hearing about, and it seems that offering a game console — a hope for many Apple fans over the past few years — won’t happen.

I fully realize that Apple can’t be everything to every customer. It delivers computers, smartphones, tablets, personal media players, two operating systems, wireless routers, and much more. But I also realize that Apple is an entertainment company. It’s about trying to give people more opportunity to enjoy their lives through technology. And it would only make sense if it doubled down on the living room.

Let’s turn our attention to the Apple TV for a minute.

Prior to its announcement in September, rumors were running rampant over what the former “hobby” would offer. Folks thought it would deliver gaming, interface with DVRs, include Apple’s App Store, and much more. They thought it would be a sizable update over its predecessor.

Instead, Apple offered a stripped-down alternative.

The second-generation Apple TV comes with the ability for users to stream Netflix content. It has Flickr and Internet radio. And it allows users to stream their music over their home network to their televisions. It offers movies and television shows, as well, but most would agree that it’s slim pickings for now.

At that event in September, Steve Jobs said that Apple’s research showed customers didn’t want everything a company could pile into a device. They simply want the ability to consume the content they enjoy without the fuss that might come along with something like Google TV-based devices.

But by delivering the bare minimum, Apple did itself no favors. The company took the easy way out and pretended like it no longer views the living room as a hobby. The only issue is, the Apple TV is still a hobby. It’s a device that lacks all the functionality we’ve come to expect from Apple — a company that typically prides itself on offering the best value for the cash. And at least so far, it leaves me wanting more.

So, what am I looking for? I want to see Apple improve the Apple TV by bringing its App Store to the platform. I’d also like to see some kind of gaming component come to the device, either through the App Store or as part of a more-capable platform.

And perhaps most importantly, I’d like to see Apple think beyond its set-top box and deliver products that try something new. I’m not sold on the possibility of Apple offering a groundbreaking television, but if it can surprise me, I’m all for it.

Simply put, I’m looking for Apple to be Apple. Right now, it’s just like every other company in the living room; it’s content to have a presence but not dominate.

That needs to end.

No single company can stake claim to the living room right now. Steve Jobs just needs to take advantage of that void and do something special.

But first, he needs to take the living room — and its revenue potential — seriously.

With the company’s future already clouded by Steve Jobs’ latest medical leave, the possibility of the iPad’s chief designer, Jonathan Ive, cashing out ups the uncertainty, Dan Lyons writes.

Is Apple losing its design guru?

When Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced in January that he would take a third medical leave, the biggest concern was the cloud of uncertainty that hovered over the company. Now that uncertainty has become an issue again, as rumors have started swirling that Apple might lose its chief designer, Jonathan Ive.

Apple's head designer Jonathan Ive poses for a portrait on January 27, 2010 in Cupertino, California. (Photo by Paul Harris / Newscom)

Reports in Ive’s native England suggest that the man who oversaw the design of the iPhone and iPad wants to spend more time in the U.K., putting him at odds with Apple’s board enough that he would consider leaving the company. Although Ive and Apple won’t comment, the scenario is plausible for two reasons: First, Ive is about to cash in options valued at $30 million that he was granted in 2008; and second, Ive has an especially close relationship with Jobs.

Whether Ive stays or goes, the brouhaha shows the challenges that Apple is increasingly likely to face given the questions about Jobs’ role in the coming months. One scenario being bandied about by Apple-watchers suggests Ive is making a power play to succeed Jobs; it seems just as likely, however, that he simply may not want to work at Apple if Jobs isn’t there.

Still others think the entire notion that Ive might leave is completely unfounded. But either way, the whole incident shows how the Jobs health situation is bringing more drama to a company that, until now, has been a model of tight-lipped discipline.

Apple’s products are famous for their sleek designs, and conventional wisdom holds that losing Ive would be a terrible blow to Apple—“Apple’s worst nightmare,” Britain’s Guardian called it. But the truth is, losing Ive may not be as big a deal as some Apple watchers think.

For one thing, Apple has loads of bench strength in every department, and because of its success it can attract just about anyone it wants.

“How much of this is Steve, how much is Jon, how much someone else? Steve always had an eye for design. The designer is only as good as the client,” says Jean-Louis Gassée.

For another, the real genius behind Apple’s designs might not be Ive—but rather Jobs.

That’s the educated guess of Jean-Louis Gassée, a former top executive at Apple and a longtime close watcher of the company who still has many connections there.

Gassée points out that Ive was already working at Apple when Jobs returned to the company in 1996. Ive joined the company in 1992, when Jobs was gone from the company, having been ousted by the board in 1985.

And before Jobs returned to Apple, Ive wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire. The first products that Ive designed under Jobs were the “Bondi Blue” iMac and the somewhat ugly iBook. Ive’s next products, the "desk lamp" Mac and the early metal laptops, were better looking, Gassée says.

It looks like women have caught up with men in numbers in the workplace. For the first time in history, women in the USA now outnumber men in the workforce, and there are now more women in supervisory positions than there are males. The question is whether they will handle the downside of working any better than men.

According to an article by Ella L. J. Edmondson Bell, Ph.D., titled The 21st Century Workplace -- Are Women the New Men?, the economic downturn has hit men harder. They held nearly 80 percent of jobs that have been lost during what is now being called the "mancession." Will women now inherit the stress, pressure, exhaustion, burn out and heart attacks commonly associated with male leaders in business?

Some predict that this new female-dominated workplace will mean a softening of the corporate culture, with more benevolent leaders. Others foresee just the opposite. Ella says many women don't want to be seen as "soft" -- and others simply aren't. No one would call Carly Fiorina, the head of Hewlett Packard from 1999 to 2005, a wilting lily. According to her memoir, Tough Choices, she was sometimes referred to as Chainsaw Carly.

All of this is especially relevant on the entrepreneurial side, since statistics show that women are starting businesses at more than twice the rate of their male counterparts. Some would argue that the growing success rate of women entrepreneurs shows that they are resourceful, and better able to succeed, despite the odds.

While I'm sure we will continue to see progress on the female side, I predict that they will struggle with the same major challenges faced today by men. These include:

  1. Funding your dream. Raising money is hard, whether you are counting on friends, investors, or banks. I rarely see women at angel investment groups, either asking for money, or offering to fund new ventures. Men seem more focused on this one.

  2. Need for increased confidence and mindset skills. Many women and men are paralyzed by perfection, plagued by pessimism, and the need to satisfy others, rather than themselves. We need more women leaders.

  3. Motivation to succeed. Every entrepreneur needs to love what they do, and believe so strongly in their product or service that they can weather the tough times. On this one, it's easy to spot the ones with passion, from either gender.

  4. Manage time and priorities. Women, often more than men, try to do too much. It's hard to balance the continual demands of the business, personal relationships, and home life. Every entrepreneur needs to prioritize the important tasks ahead of urgent tasks.

  5. Never stop learning. After you start your business, the learning really begins. True entrepreneurs look at failures as their best learning experiences. Networking, and using your network is the next most important element of learning.

I don't see any challenges which are so gender specific that they can't be overcome by any entrepreneur. Yet I don't think women should be convinced that the battle for equality is almost over. There is still the question of why there are so few women in high places, and why the average income for women in business is about 68% of men's income.

What I am hoping is that women will not just be the new men, and suffer from the same maladies and limitations. I'll be looking for women to create the "new business culture" that every worker wants -- better role definitions, more effective and productive leadership, and better work-life balance. That would make women entrepreneurs the new women, rather than the new men!

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document that is 1200 x 1200 pixels, 72 dpi, and RGB Color. Fill the layer with white. (Ctrl+Backspace or Delete)

Step 2

Now create a rectangle for the header and fill it with a white-grey color, then use the colors on the image for the “Gradient Overlay”. Our search and logo will eventually be part of the header.

Step 3

Create a new rectangle above the previous one, with attributes as shown below. The following drop shadow effect creates a look of a 1 pixel stroke which does increase the look of that simple bar. Note: this step creates a horizontal line.

Step 4

Now add the “Gradient Overlay” layer style with the hex codes indicated.

Step 5

Add a white 1 pixel stroke. The following stroke of 1 pixel will divide the grey shadow effect. It’ll eventually work as a divider.

Step 6

Make one more rectangle in the middle-right zone, and fill it with white and add a 1 px stroke as indicated – it will be our search box.

Step 7

One more rectangle should be created and filled with blue. Set the inner shadow as indicated below, this will be our search button. This blue works great in combination with grey, white and light-grey. Blue will be the major contrasting color we use as we work through this template.

Step 8

Add the Gradient Overlay details to the button with the details from image.

Step 9

Add a 1 px stroke to the button with the color indicated. Take a look at the first and the final result of the button so you can see the difference all these details made.

Step 10

Now add this drop shadow effect for the text placed in the search box, using PT Sans Bold. This will be the final step in creating your search button. You may want to try other fonts, but the PT Sans Bold is really good for this small button.

Step 11

Make another fill under the header section, this will be the navigation area. Here we will place the navigation links of our template.

Step 12

Write your navigation links using a dark-grey color, then add a white “drop shadow” effect. The effect used for the navigation links is the same used for the search button.

Step 13

With 1px vertical line, make divisions between each links. The lines should be black and will really increase the beauty of the navigation area.

Step 14

Over the home section, make a fill with the blue and then add a Gradient Overlay style as indicated.

Step 15

Copy the Home link, this time color it white and add a drop shadow effect.

Step 16

Create a big, grey zone under the navigation, it should be about 30% of the layout. This will be the background for the featured area.

Step 17

Now create a big, white rectangle and add some shadow with the details shown. A big stock image, a big headline and some text with another great button will be added.

Step 18

Add a any dummy image you want to that featured area. Be sure it covers more than 80% of the area. The one I chose is from a stock website.

Step 19

Add some text to it, use the PT SANS Bold font and make the font big.

Step 20

The remaining area should be filled with grey, in it we’ll place some text. This is really a secondary area which describes the image, the services, the company itself, or whatever you’d like.

Step 21

Place some blue-colored text which will be the title of the information below. Use the details in the image for Drop Shadow style.

Step 22

Add some dummy text. This could be some important information or whatever you’d like.

Step 23

Create another grey area under the featured zone, where we will add some text and icons later. Add the details as stated on the image. Mostly, the icons will promote the services offered by the company behind the website.

Step 24

Continue by adding a Gradient Overlay style for the last rectangle we have created in the anterior steps.

Step 25

Now we are adding titles and icons, as well as some divisions. The icons can be found in the resource list at the beginning of the tutorial. Be sure to choose your icons and text thoughtfully.

Step 26

At the border of both zones, create a small circle and fill it with dark brown color. Add some inner shadow as stated on the image.

Step 27

Continue by adding a drop shadow layer style. It is another small detail, but it really makes that button zone minimalistic, nice-looking and well designed.

Step 28

To finish, add a Gradient Overlay effect.

Step 29

By using the Custom Shape Tool (U), create an arrow in both circles. Now add the details shown on the screenshot.

Step 30

Continue by adding some Color Overlay for the arrow. It should also be a blue color because otherwise, it will not fit the contrast and the colors used on the whole template.

Step 31

Add a video screenshot in the free space and place a title for it. For this template, I have used a simple screenshot of a YouTube widget.

Step 32

Add the text “Product Highlights” and “Case Studies.” Let the text under the “Product Highlights” be links so you could showcase some friends’ websites or resources you admire/promote.

Step 33

Finish it by creating another form for e-mails, place all kind of other information, and whatever you’d like.

Step 34

Don’t forget to make a relevant/small footer for our template. If you have paid attention, you should know how to create the same effect as below.

All done! If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to drop a comment. I hope you enjoyed this whole tutorial!

Making Money Web

Here’s that big funding round for Boxee I told you about last fall: The Web video software company has raised another $16.5 million. Previous investors General Catalyst, Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures are all back, joined by new money from Softbank and Israel’s Pitango.

Boxee, which makes software that makes it easier to get video from the Web to your TV, is a buzzy company in a buzzy industry. But I wrote about Boxee’s efforts to raise $10 million to $15 million back in November. What took so long?

My hunch is that in between then and now, the startup had to figure out if it really wanted to raise more money, or sell out to a big fish. For a long time, I figured the company was eventually headed for option B, and that a cable giant like Comcast or a box-maker like Cisco would be the buyer.

And that could still happen! But now the stakes have gotten a lot higher: Boxee has now raised $28.5 million, so in order to please its investors it’s going to need a significant payout.

Which means it really will have to build a real revenue stream, which it doesn’t have yet, and won’t have until it has a significant audience. As I wrote a few months ago:

Boxee’s real plan is both clear and a bit undefined: It wants to get its software on as many devices as possible–not just the Boxee Box but everything from Sony’s TVs to Microsoft’s Xbox 360s to Samsung’s Blu-ray players. And then it wants to build some kind of business based on advertising, consumer payments or both.

So Boxee isn’t trying to make money by licensing its software to hardware companies, any more than Netflix or Pandora is when they get their apps installed on different gadgets. It’s giving D-Link, the company that’s actually making the Boxee Box, its software for free. And it will do the same for other hardware companies.

Here’s a quick interview I conducted last fall with sleep-deprived CEO Avner Ronen, going over the same territory, back in November. Note that Ronen’s plans to bring Hulu Plus to the Boxee Box have yet to pan out. What’s up with that? “As you know these things take time,” he said via email yesterday. “But we are on it.”

What to Expect When Getting a Roofers

When it comes time to repair or replace your roof, it can be a daunting task to find someone who is actually qualified to do the job. There are lots of roofers out there, however the ones who will do a congrats for a sensible price aren't often easy to find. If you are in the market for the service provider, use the ideas below for meeting with and hiring the correct one.

Job interview and Consultation

Discover answers for job interview questions by enuold

The majority of roofing contractors offer free consultations. This is especially essential, since it provides them an opportunity to evaluate exactly what your homes roof requirements, also it provides you with an opportunity to evaluate all of them. As with all of companies, believe in instincts concerning the people a person allow up onto your roof. No matter exactly how great the contractor's status or even suggestion, he or she should begin by presenting a person having a business greeting card. If a contractor occurs searching as well as speaking within an less than professional method, chances are that the task he's going to perform will also be less than professional. This is not to express that you ought to expect companies to reach in fits. They is going to be hiking in your roof, therefore most will be dressed up in jeans and work footwear or even athletic shoes. If the actual contractor appears to be interested in speaking upon their mobile phone during your homes roof than he's in analyzing your own roof's requirements, which may be an additional indication that he's not the one to do the job. For the legal protection, be certain that the actual contractor has adequate legal responsibility insurance.

Roofing Assessment

RMC Evaluation by scottkitka

Expect the service provider is going to be rising on your roofing. Actually, any kind of contractor who not need to increase in your roofing to judge the issue should be immediately reduced. Those who're serious about their own work will possibly create a drawing of the roof's surface and mark trouble spots onto it because they go through their evaluation, or even they'll consider photos or even video of the surface while they are available online for. This is a very essential action, because it allows you to observe exactly what the problems are as well as know how they will be fixed.

Estimate

Roofing And Roofing Contractor In KISSIMME, FL by roofinghub

The next step would be the written estimation. The contractor will require away their loan calculator and come track of an itemized estimation. Some contractors goes to their own truck or truck as well as write down the proposal, while others may crunch the actual numbers for the job prior to you. Once you're given the suggestion, ensure that you comprehend which items is going to be utilized, just how long the task will require and when you will find any additional or even concealed costs that may arise throughout the repair from the roof. The contractor will be able to solution many of these questions with ease and forewarn a person of any additional costs that could be incurred should the roof's ethics be broken inside.

Once you have obtained several created estimates from roofers, evaluate what every organization or contractor is willing to provide for the price. Do not always low cost the greatest bet, simply because occasionally the greatest bet will actually be the contractor who does the job properly. Also, be skeptical associated with bids which are significantly less than other people. They may be using inferior items or perhaps be untruthful about the chance of hidden costs. Most importantly, trust your instincts as well as opt for the actual service provider who makes you feel quite comfy regarding handing more than your money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Wikileaks and also the Uyghurs

Whether it were ever uncertain, information acquired through the whistleblower web site, Wikileaks, has verified Chinese government worries more than it's continued charge of the region it phone calls Xinjiang, also is referred to as East Turkestan. The actual leaked cables from Ough.S. diplomats show the degree that Chinese government bodies attempt to persuade governments globally to consider its position upon issues affecting Uyghurs. The actual cables also display the United States' issues as well as sights concerning the ongoing repressive steps in the region.

uyghur by sarvaz

Most lighting associated with Chinese government pressure are the cables directed in order to Chinese anger, or the specter associated with Chinese ire, within the release of Uyghur detainees in Guantánamo to 3rd nations. A Dec Twenty nine, 2008 cable relates how Chinese language Helper Foreign Reverend Liu Jieyi met with the Ough.Utes. Ambassador to China in order to voice Beijing's powerful opposition of release in order to any country other than The far east, which if the Ough.S. did indeed accede for this ask for it would "avoid harm to bilateral relations and to cooperation ‘in essential areas'". In addition, the February '09 cable explains how the Chinese language Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the actual possible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfriendly behave towards us" and a "slap in the face". That the Ough.S. federal government was company in not really releasing the detainees to China illustrates the actual degree from the politicized nature of the Chinese language judicial program. Legitimate concerns more than terrorism are easy to understand, but in the U.S. government's view the detainees would probably encounter do-it-yourself torture as well as execution if they returned to The far east

Chinese language government stress regarding the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't just put on the U.S. government, but additionally to Brand new Zealand and a handful of Western government authorities that were considering resettlement. Albania, Indonesia as well as Finland, as well as European Union member states all appear to have borne the brunt of Chinese language federal government unhappiness. Regarding Indonesia, that was initially willing to think about two Uyghurs upon solely relief reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo instances were much less better than other detainees because of the unwanted effects accepting Uyghurs might have on relationships along with The far east. The May Eight, '09 cable applies exactly how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer reported which Indonesia had knowledgeable The far east from the Ough.Utes. ask for to simply accept a few Uighur detainees held at Guantánamo coupled with already been subsequently warned by The far east associated with ‘a large load upon bilateral relations' if Indonesia had been to accept any kind of detainees".

The diplomatic wires additionally talk about the actual unrest in Urumchi, the local funds, in This summer 2009. The This summer 13, '09 cable talking about bulk occurrences within China says:

"Ethnic riots like those who work in Xinjiang This summer 5-7 and in Tibet in 03 of 2008 differ substantially in origin as well as nature through bulk incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized to PolOff [Political Officer] upon XXXXXXXXXXXX. Both present serious trouble for the actual Celebration, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, but the Party management wouldn't hesitate to open fire on Uighurs or even Tibetans when they considered this essential to restore order. Bulk incidents present another kind of threat, he explained, since the leadership is actually ‘afraid' to fireplace on Han rioters for fear of causing huge public outrage that would change from the Celebration."

This is a chilling opinion, especially when one considers evidence offered in two reports released this year through the Uyghur Human Privileges Project (UHRP) as well as Amnesty Worldwide that fine detail eyewitness accounts from the utilization of lethal live fire against Uyghur protestors in July 2009. Additionally, the observation which fireplace wouldn't be deployed against Han Chinese protestors has resonances for the various approach used through Chinese security causes within Urumchi in order to Han Chinese direct orders within September '09. During those direct orders, after that Celebration Secretary, Wang Lequan, addressed demonstrators, that experienced demanded that he let them know regarding government reactions in order to protection issues. An identical ask for to satisfy with the Celebration Secretary by Uyghur protesters in July was not met.

The broader consequences from the unrest also saw a brief discussion about the effect it might have upon Iran-China relations, as well as on relationships along with Sydney after World Uyghur Our elected representatives Leader, Microsoft. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke at the National Push Club in Canberra in July 2009. Within the latter case, the Chinese federal government "privately warn[ed] a significant Australian bank that vendors the National Press Membership to make use of it's impact to bar the Kadeer talk there".

The U . s . States' issues concerning the situation in the Uyghur region are available via in the cables. In a dialogue on policy direction in Tibet, Ough.S. authorities explain that it will end up being impossible with regard to Chinese language frontrunners to consider the softer collection "if they look like doing so below worldwide pressure". The actual cable television out dated April 16, 2008, one month after the outbreak of unrest in Tibetan areas, additionally relayed the actual declaration "that domestic stability remains the leadership's main concern above all else, meaning there will ‘almost surely' be no relaxation from the present difficult line on Tibet or in places like Xinjiang." The info contained in the cable additionally sheds gentle about the severe level of sensitivity that the Chinese government views territorial integrity, and also the possible spill more than of unrest through Tibet.

The prospect of methods to stress in Tibet and Xinjiang as a result of civil culture are discussed inside a Feb Twenty-four, 08 cable. While recommending that China's financial achievement will increase its potential to deal with democratic change, the actual cable also discusses how Chinese language leaders see the usefulness associated with "a restricted growth of civil culture, such as enhancements in the rule associated with law along with a stronger role with regard to authorized religions, NGOs, charities and other stars in areas that bring about sociable balance and do not problem Communist Party rule." This is a significant change in considering, that has seen U.S. authorities promote the idea that Chinese financial development, and economic relationships with The far east brings about a steadily democratic society; however, much more belief seems to be placed in the grassroots motion compared to one which starts from the best levels of the Chinese government. Nevertheless, the actual cable proves which "[i]n areas such as Tibet and Xinjiang, the fear of separatism results in tight limitations on the development of municipal culture." This approach is viewed as counter-productive by the official, who suggests that the U.Utes. federal government "should continue to express...serious issues more than Beijing's human rights record and attract China's developing awareness that greater respect for human rights, religious independence and the guideline associated with law will serve to advertise the very improvement and sociable stability that The far east looks for in addition to to improve China's worldwide picture." This type of strategy would consider substantial diplomatic skills considering "China's paranoid concern that the Usa secretly promotes routine change and ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The actual cables offer understanding of the actual every day business associated with diplomacy that's hardly ever afforded to everyone, and it is interesting to note the amount of function done behind closed doors on Uyghur issues. The importance of the part of the United States like a monitor associated with Uyghur human privileges problems within private conversations is made clear, and contrasts with its sensible open public stance. The staff of the Uyghur Individual Privileges Task is actually well aware of the pressure the Chinese government puts on Uyghur activists; nevertheless, the details of Chinese federal government pressure upon it's counterparts is actually illustrative of the degree that Chinese authorities make an effort to control contrary stories. With increased facts to come through Wikileaks, issues more than Uyghurs may not get the head lines, however the wires possess get rid of new gentle on the documentation of individual rights conditions in the Uyghur area.

Whether it were ever in doubt, info acquired through the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, offers confirmed Chinese federal government fears more than it's continued control of the location this calls Xinjiang, which is also known as East Turkestan. The leaked wires through U.S. diplomats show the actual degree to which Chinese language government bodies make an effort to convince governments worldwide to consider its position on issues affecting Uyghurs. The wires also show the actual U . s . States' concerns as well as views concerning the on going repressive steps in the region.

The majority of lighting associated with Chinese federal government pressure would be the wires pointing in order to Chinese frustration, or the specter of Chinese language ire, over the discharge of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to 3rd countries. The Dec 29, 2008 cable applies how Chinese language Assistant Foreign Reverend Liu Jieyi met using the Ough.Utes. Ambassador to The far east in order to voice Beijing's strong competitors associated with launch in order to any kind of nation other than The far east, which when the U.S. did indeed accede for this ask for it might "avoid injury to bilateral relations and also to cooperation ‘in important areas'". Furthermore, the February 2009 cable explains how the Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded the feasible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfavorable behave towards us" and a "slap in the face". The U.S. federal government was firm in not really releasing the actual detainees to China demonstrates the actual extent from the politicized character from the Chinese language judicial system. Legitimate issues more than terrorism tend to be understandable, but in the actual U.Utes. government's observe the detainees might probably face do-it-yourself torture as well as delivery if they returned in order to The far east

Chinese language federal government stress regarding the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't only put on the actual U.S. government, but also in order to Brand new Zealand along with a handful of Western government authorities which were considering resettlement. Albania, Germany as well as Finland, as well as European Union member says all have the symptoms of borne the actual impact of Chinese government disappointment. In the case of Indonesia, which was at first prepared to think about two Uyghurs upon purely relief grounds, Uyghur Guantánamo cases were much less preferable to other detainees because of the negative effects accepting Uyghurs would have on relationships along with The far east. A Might 8, 2009 cable television relates how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer documented which Germany had informed The far east from the Ough.Utes. ask for to simply accept a few Uighur detainees kept at Guantánamo and had already been consequently warned by China of ‘a large burden on bilateral relations' if Indonesia had been to accept any detainees".

The diplomatic cables additionally talk about the actual unrest in Urumchi, the actual regional funds, in This summer 2009. A July 13, '09 cable talking about bulk occurrences within The far east says:

"Ethnic riots such as those who work in Xinjiang July 5-7 as well as in Tibet within March associated with 08 differ substantially within source as well as character through bulk incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized in order to PolOff [Political Officer] upon XXXXXXXXXXXX. Both existing serious problems for the actual Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX said, but the Party leadership wouldn't hesitate to open fireplace on Uighurs or Tibetans if they considered it essential to recover purchase. Mass occurrences present another kind of risk, he said, since the leadership is actually ‘afraid' to fireplace on Han rioters for anxiety about causing massive open public outrage that will turn against the Celebration."

This can be a relaxing viewpoint, particularly when one views the evidence presented by 50 percent reviews launched this year through the Uyghur Human Privileges Project (UHRP) and Amnesty Worldwide which detail eyewitness company accounts of the utilization of deadly live fireplace against Uyghur protestors in July '09. In addition, the actual declaration which fire wouldn't be used against Han Chinese protestors has resonances for the different approach used by Chinese language security causes within Urumchi to Han Chinese direct orders in Sept 2009. Throughout individuals protests, then Celebration Secretary, Wang Lequan, addressed protesters, that experienced demanded he inform them regarding federal government responses in order to protection issues. An identical ask for to satisfy with the Celebration Assistant by Uyghur demonstrators within July was not fulfilled.

The actual wider repercussions of the unrest also saw a short dialogue about the effect it would possess on Iran-China relationships, as well as on relations with Australia after Globe Uyghur Congress President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke in the National Press Membership in Canberra within July 2009. Within the second option situation, china federal government "privately warn[ed] a major Aussie financial institution which sponsors the nation's Push Membership to make use of it's impact to bar the Kadeer talk there".

The United States' concerns concerning the situation within the Uyghur region are available through in the cables. In a dialogue upon policy path within Tibet, U.S. officials clarify that it will be not possible with regard to Chinese leaders to adopt a softer line "if they look like they are doing so below worldwide pressure". The cable television out dated 04 16, 08, 30 days following the outbreak of unrest in Tibetan regions, additionally relayed the declaration "that domestic stability continues to be leadership's main concern most of all, which means there'll ‘almost surely' be no rest of the current hard collection upon Tibet or perhaps in places such as Xinjiang." The info included in the cable television additionally storage sheds light on the severe level of sensitivity with which the Chinese federal government sights territorial integrity, and the possible spill over of unrest through Tibet.

The chance of solutions to tensions within Tibet and Xinjiang arising from municipal society are debated in a February Twenty-four, 08 cable television. Whilst suggesting that China's economic achievement increases its resistance to democratic reform, the cable television also talks about how Chinese frontrunners begin to see the effectiveness of "a limited expansion associated with municipal society, such as enhancements within the rule associated with regulation and a stronger role with regard to authorized beliefs, NGOs, charities and other actors in places which contribute to social balance and don't problem Communist Party rule." This is a notable alternation in considering, which has seen U.S. officials market the idea that Chinese financial development, and financial relationships along with The far east will bring in regards to a steadily democratic society; however, much more belief appears to be placed in the grassroots motion than one that starts from the top levels of the Chinese language government. Nevertheless, the cable television proves which "[i]n areas such as Tibet as well as Xinjiang, the fear of separatism leads to tighter restrictions on the growth of civil society." This approach is viewed as counter-productive through the recognized, who shows that the actual Ough.S. government "should still express...serious issues more than Beijing's individual rights record and attract China's developing awareness that greater respect for human rights, religious independence and also the rule of regulation will serve to promote the improvement as well as sociable stability that The far east seeks as well as to improve China's worldwide image." This type of technique would consider considerable diplomatic abilities thinking about "China's weird fear the Usa privately encourages regime alter and ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet as well as Xinjiang".

The cables provide insight into the daily company of diplomacy that is rarely afforded to the general public, and it is fascinating to note the amount of work carried out behind closed doors on Uyghur problems. The significance of the role of the United States as a monitor associated with Uyghur individual rights conditions in personal conversations is created obvious, as well as contrasts using its sensible open public stance. Employees from the Uyghur Individual Rights Task is actually comfortable with the pressure china federal government exerts upon Uyghur activists; nevertheless, the facts associated with Chinese language federal government stress upon it's alternatives is illustrative from the degree which Chinese authorities attempt to control contrary stories. With increased facts in the future from Wikileaks, issues more than Uyghurs might not grab the headlines, but the cables have shed brand new gentle about the paperwork of human privileges problems within the Uyghur region.

Little about the Uyghurs

In the middle of the desert landscapes of Taklamakan, in the northern-west part of China, the land of Xinjiang is the very least populated province whereas it covers near to a sixth with the country's area. Getting resisted while in centuries the Han Chinese domination, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, or Old Eastern Turkistan, fell into under the Chinese Han control in 1949. From then, its population is primarily Uyghurs and Turkish - speaking System.

Islamic primarily, the Uyghur people have a very good religious identity which, in specific, permitted them to maintain a strong difference towards the Chinese invader. Really, the Uyghur Kingdom of Mongolia knew a great civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

While in their own historical past, the Uyghur People successively taken on Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before lastly converting to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., thus starting the way to the Islamization of the complete Central Asia.

Under the effect of the beliefs which they taken on, the Uyghurs used successively, and at times in a competing way, a large number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own graphic system.

Allah الله by Faleh Zahrawi فالح الزهراوي

The coming of Islam was a great change because it was supported by the absorption of the Uyghur areas in the immense Turco-Mongolian and Muslim Kingdom. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan slowly replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used currently.

If their writing, their language and their religion mark a real big difference with the culture of Chinese Han, Uyghur People also are different from their aspect, so aspect of Central Asia's people. A shiny skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features directing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek origins of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has included the proper identity of these remote people, although they represent only 9 million people - a little for this specific immense region. Therefore, Uyghur people are now part of the fifty six ethnic minority groups having been recognized in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This statute allows these people a few privileges in a land where their difference is very often repressed. Thus, Uyghur people escape the "single child policy" and their language is known as the second official language in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The integration of the Uyghur people and their culture in the People's Republic of China, however, seems very illusory. The presence of all-natural resources in Xinjiang, and its proximity with nations recognised as very sensitive, highly urged the government to accelerate the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the higher responsibility jobs.

In response to this true will to assimilate the Uyghur people into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Asserting more flexibility, but mainly the recognition of their true identity, this movement was severely repressed by the power authorities in place Xinjiang.

The situations of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghur population continues today to proudly continue to keep their identification and their culture , though they become a minority on their own territory.

personal finances help

The Great Recession might be officially over, but that’s not helping Americans save money, and they’re growing increasingly worried about it, according to survey results released Tuesday.

The portion of people “very concerned” about the impact of the current recession on their personal finances rose from 43 percent last year to 49 percent this year, according to the survey commissioned by the American Savings Education Council and the “America Saves” campaign, with more than 1,000 participating groups.

“The recession clearly has not ended for millions of Americans,” said Stephen Brobeck, executive director of the Consumer Federation of America. High unemployment, consumer and mortgage debt, and the housing crisis help explain why savers haven’t made much progress.

The positive economic indicators often reported by the government and media measure how the climate is improving for businesses and affluent people, he said.

Meanwhile, regular people’s most valuable asset is their house, which in most markets has failed to regain value. And many workers are not getting pay increases at work. Instead, they’re contributing more to their health insurance plans while employers contribute less to their retirement plans, he said. Many households have tapped into their savings rather than add to it, he said.

The good news is that over the past year, the proportion of those with a saving plan rose from 55 to 57 percent, those saving for retirement at work rose from 49 to 54 percent, and those saving automatically outside work rose from 41 to 44 percent.

Having a plan is important, savings experts said. For example, the survey found 88 percent of those with a plan spent less than their income and saved the difference, compared with just half of those without a savings plan. Those with a plan also are better at paying debt, building emergency savings and saving for retirement, according to the survey.

Some of those differences are due to differences in income. But not all, America Saves officials said.

“Saving is for everyone, not just the financially fortunate,” said Washington State Treasurer James L. McIntire.

It took me a long time to get through The Money Book for Freelancers, Part-Timers, and the Self-Employed. That’s not usually high praise for a book, but in this case I mean it to be. It took me a long time to read because it was so darn useful. I had to keep stopping to go do the exercises the authors suggested. Now my files are organized, my retirement funds are set up, and my favorite bookmark is free to be slotted into the next finance book I read.

Writers Joesph D’Agnese and Denise Kiernan have been freelancing a long time. Along the way, they’ve made all sorts of mistakes with their finances, but they’ve also gotten to a place where they have a stable, smooth financial system that works. As journalists, their work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Wired, and a dozen other places. Now they’ve turned their considerable writing talents to sharing their financial expertise. It’s a winning combination.

Freelancers are People Too

The basic principles of money management are the same, no matter which book or expert presents them. What changes is how the information is presented, and how likely you are to be motivated to follow the advice. The Money Book for Freelancers is special because it frames simple money management wisdom in a way that makes sense for freelancers and contractors.

Independent workers have special financial needs. It was a huge help to me to see them laid out in black-and-white. I knew abstractly that I should be saving for retirement, for example. Now I know the details of an SEP-IRA, how it differs from a Roth IRA, and why a self-employed person can benefit from having both accounts. I now have a percentage of my income set aside for retirement each month instead of a flat dollar amount.

The beauty of The Money Book for Freelancers is the organizational system it brings to sound money principles. The authors advocate a system of dedicated bank accounts very like the one I’ve been using for the past year. (J.D. uses a system similar to this, too.)

To whit:

  • You want one account at a local bank that you use for your deposits, spending, and daily cash flow.

  • You have savings accounts dedicated to particular goals that you keep in a high-interest savings account at an online bank.

  • The core of their system is a Holy Trinity of Savings Accounts that includes an Emergency Fund, a Tax Account and a Retirement Account.

For most people at a traditional job, the employer handles the bookkeeping related to taxes and retirement. You may want to add additional retirement funds like a Roth IRA to your retirement portfolio, but at its most basic, retirement accounts and taxes are handled by your company. Doing it yourself isn’t that complicated, but it can seem intimidating. If you’re starting out like I am, it’s nice to have someone hold your hand through getting set up.

The other great thing about The Money Book for Freelancers is the writing style. D’Agnese and Kiernan are like personal trainers for your financial life. They’re constantly cheering you on to stretch your abilities and resources, while candidly holding you accountable for your choices. Whether you freelance or not, their attitude is refreshing. If you do freelance, you’ll likely find their life lessons and anecdotes eerily familiar.

Keep It Simple

The weakness of this book is its authors’ love of complexity. They often recommend multiple accounts in places where one would do. For example, harkening back to the example above, they recommend two or three retirement accounts for each self-employed worker: an SEP-IRA that functions a lot like a 401K, a Roth IRA, and a taxable brokerage account. For most of us, that’s overkill.

I make a decent salary freelancing these days. Even so, if I succeed at saving 10 percent of my income for retirement this year, I won’t save more than the $5,000 I can put into a Roth IRA. There’s no reason for me to maintain other accounts unless my income and savings jumps to a point where I’ve capped out my contributions to the Roth. I really don’t need an SEP-IRA, and won’t until my income is double my current one. While a lot of freelancers make enough money to worry about SEP-IRAs, most people are probably served just fine by a Roth IRA, and maybe a traditional IRA to pick up additional retirement savings in a good year.

Likewise, the authors’ focus on saving for retirement before paying off debt probably means paying more interest over the long term. Yes, it’s good to establish good habits. Freelancers especially need to rely on their own savings practices. No company pension will save you if you screw it up. But saving up a big emergency fund and a retirement nest egg while you’re recovering from credit card debt can be penny wise and pound foolish. A lot of pounds of foolishness, depending on how much debt you have and what interest rates you’re paying. I’ve recently shifted some of my own debt snowball to savings, but my remaining loans are all very low interest (under 5%), and I’m willing to pay a little more interest in exchange for building up a secure emergency fund.

The Bottom Line

I’d like to see this book take a somewhat more streamlined approach to financial savvy. If you’re self-employed, especially if you’re just starting out, there’s plenty of good in here. It was well worth the read, and I got a lot out of the exercises. I’d just recommend it alongside another basic money book like J.D.’s Your Money: The Missing Manual or Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover.

Probably the ideal system for any individual will be a hybrid of what various experts offer. D’Agnese and Kiernan have some wonderful ingredients in their soup, but don’t follow the recipe blindly.
