Financial knowledge is not something that was ever taught in school. Often times, we learned everything that we know about money from family and friends, most importantly, our parents.

This can be both good and bad depending on the habits and perspective our parents had. Most parents that managed their personal finances well have children with similar characteristics and vice versa. In some cases, children learn from their parents mistakes because the financial mess was so catastrophic that the kids do the exact opposite. In both instances, the knowledge normally comes from the same primary source.

Money is a very sensitive and private topic for most people. Due to the fact that money and personal finance aren't openly discussed means that it is vital for people to learn how to better understand money and manage their personal finances.

If money and personal finance was taught in school, millions of young people wouldn't get into the financial trouble they are in today. If you need a quick financial education, here are some tips to help keep your finances in control.

Open a checking account. If you already have one, you know how vital the checking account is and if you don't have one already, a checking account is the primary source of your financial system. A checking account is the primary source for deposits, which is the money that you have coming in, and withdrawals or debits, which is the money that you have coming out. Due to money going into and out of the account means that proper tracking is vital to avoid any fees or unwanted hardships.

Balance your checking account with a ledger to keep track of all deposits and withdrawals which will give you an accurate reflection of your current balance. At times, your balance that is presented by the bank does not reflect pending transactions that might add or subtract from your balance. By utilizing your ledger you will always know how much money you have available to spend or use at your discretion. To make sure that you won't run into any problems, it might be a good idea to have $100 that is always in your account to use as a buffer.

Get a credit card, preferably with the same bank that holds your checking account. A credit card is a great resource to start building a positive credit history and help you manage your finances. There are a couple of rules to remember when using your credit card. Always keep the balance at fifty percent of the card limit or less so your credit will not be negatively affected. Charge on your credit card and then pay down the balance over time, like a 6 month period, and then charge on it again. This will also improve your credit rating because it shows that you understand how to manage credit. And most importantly, make your monthly payments on time. This is the beauty about having the credit card with the same bank as your credit card because you can pay without having to send a payment in. It can all be done using the internet or inside of your local branch.

One last thing you'll need to do is start saving your money. It is preferable that you use a separate account from your checking account. You can usually establish a savings account that is used to save money as your safety net. You usually want to have an emergency fund of at least 6 months worth of all of your expenses. Once you have this emergency fund established, continue to save money because it never goes out of style.
