'Counter-Terror' Policy Targets Uyghurs

2011-04-07
A new report says China uses the threat of terrorism to crack down on Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

AFP
Uyghur men and women chat outside a mosque in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

China's anti-terrorism policy deliberately targets ethnic minority communities such as Uyghurs and Tibetans struggling for greater autonomy, according to a white paper by a rights group.

The policy equates terrorism with groups pushing for more self-governing rights, is too broad in scope, and shirks international human rights commitments, said the Hong Kong and New York-based Human Rights in China (HRIC).

The paper looked into human rights concerns within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a regional intergovernmental organization which includes China and five other member states-Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan-with a total population of 1.5 billion people.

It said the SCO approach to counter-terrorism, modeled on China'sThree Evils doctrine, and highlighting principles of territorial integrity, noninterference in internal affairs, and social stability, contributes to supporting repressive regimes at the expense of human rights.

A failure to demand accountability from the SCO undermines the effectiveness and integrity of the international system in countering terrorism and advancing rule of law, peace, and security, HRIC said.

"China's approach to counter-terrorism is the Three Evils doctrine, and it links terrorism with separatism and extremism," HRIC director Sharon Hom said in an interview.

"This Three Evils approach is overbroad, highly politicized, and while not exclusively applied only to ethnic minority groups, it is regularly applied to Uyghurs and Tibetans in its practice."

Hom said other SCO member states follow China's lead by recognizing Xinjiang and Tibet as inalienable territories of China and repatriating its ethnic minorities who seek asylum within their borders.

"China has enormous clout in the SCO, and you can also see it in the ways in which the other SCO member states and the SCO will completely parrot China's line and China's policy on these two so-called autonomous regions."

Treatment of Uyghurs

The HRIC white paper said it found "serious issues" concerning China's treatment of Uyghurs, including the principle of non-refoulement and potential use of torture during interrogations.

Regulations specific to Xinjiang became part of China's domestic counter-terrorism legal framework in December 2009 when provincial-level lawmakers revised the region's Comprehensive Management of Social Order.

Through the revisions, Chinese authorities were ordered to specifically crack down on the three threats of "terrorism, separatism, and extremism" in the aftermath of the July 2009 ethnic violence in Urumqi which left hundreds dead, according to official media reports.

HRIC called the amendments "unique" to Xinjiang, adding that "such singular focus by the Chinese government ... suggests that the concept of terrorism has been applied in a biased fashion, with the Uyghur community the subject of intense scrutiny and suspicion."

It noted that while China does face real threats of terrorism, "the limited involvement of Uyghurs in terrorist acts cannot serve as justification of widespread repression throughout [Xinjiang] or the labeling of peaceful Uyghur activists under the rubric of the Three Evils."

Adherence to rules

But despite its reliance on the Three Evils doctrine, HRIC wrote, China continues to claim that it is acting to "firmly uphold and fulfill the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council," according to a statement by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

Under U.N. rules, China pledged to oppose the "arbitrary widening" of the scope of fighting terrorism and identifying terrorism with any specific ethnic group or religion.

"The Three Evils doctrine undermines this principled approach and, in doing so, compromises human rights guaranteed under international law, and international counter-terrorism efforts as a whole," HRIC said.

HRIC recommended that Beijing narrow its "Three Evils"-based approach to national security and reformulate its definition of terrorism.

On June 24 last year, Chinese authorities announced they had broken up a "terrorist" ring of a Uyghur separatist group, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), after arresting more than ten of its members involved in an alleged major plot against China.

The announcement said that information leading to the arrest had been obtained through the investigation of 20 "individuals of Chinese citizenship" who had been deported to China on December 20, 2009-the exact date that Cambodia deported 20 Uyghurs seeking asylum following the July 5 ethnic unrest in Urumqi.

The statement also indicated that several of the alleged ETIM members had confessed to participating in a wide array of terrorist activities during interrogation.

Human Rights Watch said in February that the Cambodian government has a "dismal track record" of deporting refugees granted asylum status by the UNHCR, particularly those from neighboring countries such as China and Vietnam.

Ethnic tensions

Millions of Uyghurs-a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim-populate Central Asia and the Xinjiang region.

Ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and majority Han Chinese settlers have simmered for years, and erupted in riots in July 2009 that left some 200 people dead, according to the Chinese government's tally.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining links to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Roofing West Vancouver Problems

Vancouver Roofing

In Vancouver extra care is needed whenever obtaining a estimate for a home. The roofing company within Vancouver needs to know precisely what they are coping with when getting your roof away. Unexpected costs are a common scenario in Vancouver and every owner should be prepared

Heritage- being one of the earliest areas within the GVRD you are able to realize that there are some pretty aged homes. With a high pitch roof, most likely in the vicinity of 12/12 message which basically means Forty five degree position roofing. The original roof had been cedar shake sitting on taping. I don't know if it was being lazy or the tradition, in the event that people were attempting to cut costs but when you have this roof you most likely got more than one coating on the roof. The initial is still upon and 2 other levels sit above the actual cedar tremble. I've run into house where 5 levels sitting along with the house. Based on creating code now days a Vancouver Roofing company should eliminate just about all layers if your brand new roof is to be positioned over. You people tend to pay much more due to the steepness, the actual few levels associated with roofing, the plyboard outdoor patio and the trouble. You are probably 2 feet from your neighbours

Vancouver Roofing

Reduced Downward slope -- Vancouver special houses run throughout East Vancouver. The actual minor problem with these houses when it comes to roofing is that fewer and fewer roofing businesses available perform tar as well as tiny rocks. The option you've is actually torch upon or metal. Asphalt tiles cannot go on these types of houses. Your own message would be to reduced and asphalt most likely wouldn't final 10 years. Vancouver Roofing contractors that have been in the commercial associated with torch upon for more than ten years are probably dependable. Snow and ice build up upon these types of rooftops trigger mini swimming pools to develop on your roof and trigger main leaking, keep the gutters and downpipes obvious.

Reduced Downward slope or even High Downward slope cedar tremble - Within Vancouver this is common about the Western side. There isn't much to say of Cedar in Vancouver. There was an extended time period with the 60's, 70's as well as Eighties whenever Vancouver Roofing companies weren't installing cedar. Most Cedar roofs tend to be brand new construction. cedar may be the 1 creation that most problems can be established before the function begins

Reduced Slope or Steep Downward slope Asphalt roofing - If you have asphalt roofing also it hasn't been transformed within the last 10 years then you've a good outdoor patio. Because the 1970's asphalt came into the market. Along with new construction shiplap or even also known as tongue as well as groove had been the only choice of a strong outdoor patio. Shiplap moves a great deal in the winter and in summer time so plyboard ought to be layered down by the roofer

Roof covering in Burnaby

Roofing within Burnaby can have it's challenges and the best way to go through all of them is to function through Northern to Southern beginning at the very top of Burnaby. In Northern Burnaby the hills start to incline and decrease with a fairly strong perspectives. The big challenges I've found listed here are front yard steepness as well as use of the home, although this may not seem like a issue to you it's a really big issue for a roofer that has at hand carry your old roofing up the hill and hand carry your brand-new roof down the hill.

Hard, a slope area in this region kept building companies aside and for that reason you've homes that were all built through individually hired construction businesses. There are several portions of North Burnaby which have little contractors houses all constructed collectively but as far as which Central Burnaby has. North Burnaby has more interesting built styles as well as rooftops making a ball recreation area determine estimate in this area pretty hard.

Roofing Burnaby

Main Burnaby is how big building businesses having a standard new way of building the house had been pretty hectic during the 70`s and earlier 80`s. Having a shiplap outdoor patio becoming the only real choice as well as asphalt shingles being the option and placed on a home. These days shiplap is the roofing contractors adversary due to the fact that the shingles nowadays aren't designed to use shiplap. Trying to convince main Burnaby they have to re-deck the rooftop along with plywood offers often been overlooked and for good reason.

The quality of shiplap is high in this particular area with many of it that I have come across being between Six and Eight in . which is ideal. Apart from that this part of Burnaby is fairly easy to roof in with entry not being a problem all that often and a clear style in steep roof that is easy to understand. Lots of Vancouver specials focused right here in order to with flashlight upon being the main option in the original tar residue and gravel option. Cedar rooftops often spread the eastern aspect of this area with most transforming to asphalt

South Burnaby tends to have bigger roofs which are scattered with asphalt and cedar tremble. Cedar shake roofs in this area are usually through homes close to 20 years aged. This particular house tends to transform into a asphalt roofing and most have okay entry but some don't and the roofs are not everything in order to high. A few asphalt rooftops down right here have plywood decks that is usually a large saver for just about any home owner

Roofing West Vancouver

West Vancouver is really a area associated with valley's and ridges, high drive-ways as well as hidden roofs. This can be a roofing contractors headache but you will find roofing businesses that work in the region and understand what they most likely could be dealing with. Unlike other metropolitan areas within the Metro Vancouver area, big construction companies didn't buy large tracks associated with land as well as build patterned suv cul-de-sacs. They do exist however to some smaller diploma than other cities. Consequently you'll find in a single street 20 homes all built differently. I suppose because of the property scenery this was the only way to obtain homes built in some areas.

There was certainly the boom throughout the 1970's by the shear quantity of shiplap patio's available. The majority of roofs within West Vancouver that require a replacement tend to be asphalt roofs which take a seat on the shiplap outdoor patio. These people shingle is normally the interlock shingle which was made for shiplap however no more obtainable in the higher Vancouver region. Most property owners in West Vancouver tend to be learning they now require a plywood deck to pay for the actual shiplap.

Cedar Shake Roof Replacement by American Custom Contractors

A few Cedar rooftops exist in West Vancouver although not much that requires replacing. The majority of twenty years old cedar tremble rooftops within West Vancouver have been replaced so you find a cedar roof in some places. Replacing cedar with cedar isn't a just about all in order to common practice and most Cedar rooftops have been in new construction.

West Vancouver Roofing

Vancouver specials are not all to typical in West Vancouver. Flashlight on and tar residue and tiny rocks can be obtained but not recommended. The rain and wind is commonly a bit more extreme in West Vancouver, with the large quantities of trees and shrubs and also the possibility of a heavy snow fall steel is really a high recommendation.

Getting a roof estimation in West Vancouver can be quite diverse from the individual residing right on the doorstep. for those who have a steep driveway, have a roof that is steeper compared to 30 degrees and over Two thousand sq ft than you can pay more than $ 2000 than your own neighbour. The kind of roof and amount of flashing can make a big difference. In West Vancouver it is very tough to golf ball park a price with this really cause. I guess you could state in line with the little property you live on and the style of the roofing could make all the difference between a high estimate along with a reduced estimate. Roof entry is a huge issue with a few roofing contractors having to hand have the old roofing more than hundred feet compared to hands carrying the new roofing a hundred feet towards the house.

Get 3 estimations to check apples with apples but for the exact same item, gives you a chance to become knowledgeable and get the best concerns. The majority of rooftops within West Vancouver is actually under ventilated therefore make sure when you get your roof estimate you can observe in the event that each and every estimate you receive may upgrade your ventilation or your new roof will not final. The extra air flow isn't the addition price so the more the actual better, you can't have a restrict on air flow. Sapling debris is really a issue therefore maintain your roof without damaging the rooftop item. drip blower is probably the greatest type of maintenance.

The house are usually constructed with exactly the same style and also have the exact same air flow issues so when it's time to substitute your neighbors then it is time for you to substitute your own..

Brand new construction roofing Victoria two decades back included in regards to a twenty 12 months warranty. Most roofs begin to drip soon after the 20 12 months tag as well as all of a sudden the entire road is getting their own rooftops replaced. When A Victoria roofing estimator involves your house and you are upon good conditions together with your neighbors maybe you might persuade your own neighbors to get a roof estimation as well. Most Victoria roofing Contractors can offer two estimations. The first is the estimate if perhaps you had been to change you home alone in the street. Another estimate is for you and the neighbors that have opted for the estimation too, for those who have persuaded your neighbors to do so.

Victoria roofing companies can save profit two main areas whenever several roofing. One out of the actual shipping price of the types of materials is reduced whenever a roofing organization could possibly get three homes in one shipping. Whenever neighbours customize the roofing task carried out collectively this provides long term home owners to do exactly the same in thirty many years when your brand new rooftops obtain aged.

Find the Best Victoria Roofing Company

I live in Victoria as well as know how difficult it is to locate a decent service provider to work on your home. All of them appear real first plus they just about all guarantee the globe. Unfortunately there are some that actually provide on these guarantees.

Roofing contractors aren't any exception and need to do your research to be able to discount the good types from the bad ones.

The roof is a vital component of any house. This is your primary hurdle of many of the components found outside. If you have the leaking roofing you could find your self placing plenty of pots and pans all through your home to catch the water. If your roofing gets truly bad additionally you danger this caving in from one point.

Fortunately if your roofing is built the proper way it will are a number of years. There are even a few roofs that are both so great they are able to are fifty years.

Finding a reliable roof covering organization within Victoria and you require this type of function carried out is of the utmost importance. You want somebody who is going to give you a fair bet, get the job done in a timely manner, and employ regular or over average materials.

This is the goal you just have to good the roof to have an area who's willing and able to get it done.

Greenville Texas Roofing Contractor by builderonlinesolutions

Here are a few things that Personally, i would look for and will make an application for not just Victoria, but every area in the united kingdom:

When i first like to start with recommendations. I understand I'm not alone who has a house and that i wish to request others their own viewpoint but experienced roofing function carried out prior to me. Friends, members of the family, coworkers, acquaintances, and other people you realize will often not really drive a person wrong. They can use a direct you to definitely an individual who has been doing a fantastic job for them. Unless of course a person does not like a person these were usually not suggest a roof covering company in Victoria that has carried out shoddy function.

Next, you need to get at least three estimates. Roofing jobs are costly by nature and you want a contractor who is going to provide you with a reasonable as well as reasonable cost. Bear in mind a fair as well as sensible quotation is going to be higher. Comprehend too that roof covering contractors pay a few of the highest insurance rates out of any kind of industry in the nation. Since the work done roofing companies workers comp rates tend to be about 5 times higher than other like companies. It's not out of the ordinary with this kind of company to pay $30 within workers compensation rates for every hundred bucks they shell out within payroll. These types of costs have to be passed on to the customer. Therefore, when you are getting an offer from a roofing company understand that at least 30 to 40% of what he is charging a person is simply to pay for administrative as well as insurance costs. An individual who sends in to you and very reduced bet is probably uninsured weren't covered at all.

Everything ought to be created about the contract. Including the types of materials for use in your home and also the time it will take to install them. Do not leave something as a spoken contract. You need to be in a position to precisely evaluate that which you were getting for the price you're having to pay making an informed decision. Once the estimators come they'll attempt to bait a person in to signing something immediately. Do not do it. You need 3 estimations, side by side on your desk, and also you have to take time to read all of them each carefully including the small print.

Finally, check on the Victoria's roofing companies experience and reputation. You would like them to possess sufficient experience to be able to do the job. Optimally, you'll need a company that's been around the block and nothing can shock all of them. Should they have existed not less than five years they're going to have the reputation of either performing excellent function are now being con artists. The best people to ask our local companies. Even if it's their own rival a company owner had been not often speak poor about an additional organization unless of course he really feels he is doing care terrible function. You should consider asking roof covering providers that they think is the best. These people use 100s a roofer's every month and therefore are inside a great position to give you inside information.

These are the three items I'd look for when selecting my personal roofer. I'm fussy concerning the individuals I select to work with and you ought to be picky too. You can't rely on a companies yellow-colored web page advert to tell a person what they are about. Each and every company states of the the very best. Roofing companies are no exclusion and often accompany what the largest phone book ad of the most popular criminals.

Research your options and you ought to be able to find a good Victoria roofing business. Take your time and do not let anyone rush you. Go with your gut and do not spend your hard earned money with anyone you feel uncomfortable along with

The right roofer Victoria is appropriate at the doorway step should you choose your own due diligence and thoroughly check the corporation's history and status. This will make sure you don't get sold on something you do not need or even using the services of a con artist.

Make sure you get more information at more information regarding Victoria roofing companies.

Who's Making Money

Blogger Andrew Trench recently presented a theory on the threshold of when Internet penetration starts to matter, writing:

Social networks have also been given plenty of credit for the revolution unfolding in Egypt.

So I went and had a look at the numbers over on www.internetworldstats.com to see what they could tell us about these two scenarios. Well, fascinatingly, both Egypt and Tunisia have seen a massive growth in internet users and internet penetration over the last 10 years.

Both have now got internet penetration of over 20% and in Tunisia's case it was as high as 34%.

While it is clearly simplistic to over-state this factor and there must be many more drivers contributing to such a rapid political uprising, it is obviously a factor as evidenced by the Egyptian regime pulling the plug on the country's internet access to try and block the rising tide of revolt.

My back-of-napkin theory is this: that a rapid increase in internet penetration in a repressive regime does play an important role as it provides an unfettered channel of communication allowing disaffected citizens to share views - and more importantly - to rapidly organise and mobilise.

If Egypt and Tunisia are valid case studies, it looks like internet penetration of around 20% is the mark.

Geopolitics & Macroeconomics adds:

Internet penetration: Social networking sites were critical to sustaining the momentum in the recent protests. The internet penetration in Egypt is 16%. In Libya, it is a meagre 5% [1]. The unrest in Libya has thus far remained concentrated in regions that are geographically distant from the seat of ‘real' power (see more on this below). The dependence of momentum on internet communication is far greater in Libya than in Egypt where protests began in Cairo itself.

Taking the conversation to Pakistan, Sabene Saigol writes, on BrandRepublic:

Perhaps one reason for this is that we're still not that used to communicating via the ‘net - maybe we need greater broadband and internet penetration. Personally I think it is more to do with culture - while Pakistani internet users are savvy to using social media to connect with friends, I feel they have not yet ‘crossed over' to seeing SM as a means for professional communications - or even wider social communications that go beyond their immediate circle. Yes, there are no doubt savvy people - both within marketing and tech circles, and outside - however, these people are likely a tiny proportion of the total number of ‘net and social media users.

For Apple, the mobile market is a cash cow. The company’s iPhone and iPad are proving to be the top mobile companions for people around the globe. Apple has sold over 100 million iPhones. Its iPad sales have hit 15 million. The company understands the mobile market and it knows how to capitalize on it.

But what about the living room? It has the Apple TV, sure, and the Mac mini is often times connected to an HDTV, but what else has Apple done to push the envelope in the living room? It still hasn’t launched the long-rumored television we keep hearing about, and it seems that offering a game console — a hope for many Apple fans over the past few years — won’t happen.

I fully realize that Apple can’t be everything to every customer. It delivers computers, smartphones, tablets, personal media players, two operating systems, wireless routers, and much more. But I also realize that Apple is an entertainment company. It’s about trying to give people more opportunity to enjoy their lives through technology. And it would only make sense if it doubled down on the living room.

Let’s turn our attention to the Apple TV for a minute.

Prior to its announcement in September, rumors were running rampant over what the former “hobby” would offer. Folks thought it would deliver gaming, interface with DVRs, include Apple’s App Store, and much more. They thought it would be a sizable update over its predecessor.

Instead, Apple offered a stripped-down alternative.

The second-generation Apple TV comes with the ability for users to stream Netflix content. It has Flickr and Internet radio. And it allows users to stream their music over their home network to their televisions. It offers movies and television shows, as well, but most would agree that it’s slim pickings for now.

At that event in September, Steve Jobs said that Apple’s research showed customers didn’t want everything a company could pile into a device. They simply want the ability to consume the content they enjoy without the fuss that might come along with something like Google TV-based devices.

But by delivering the bare minimum, Apple did itself no favors. The company took the easy way out and pretended like it no longer views the living room as a hobby. The only issue is, the Apple TV is still a hobby. It’s a device that lacks all the functionality we’ve come to expect from Apple — a company that typically prides itself on offering the best value for the cash. And at least so far, it leaves me wanting more.

So, what am I looking for? I want to see Apple improve the Apple TV by bringing its App Store to the platform. I’d also like to see some kind of gaming component come to the device, either through the App Store or as part of a more-capable platform.

And perhaps most importantly, I’d like to see Apple think beyond its set-top box and deliver products that try something new. I’m not sold on the possibility of Apple offering a groundbreaking television, but if it can surprise me, I’m all for it.

Simply put, I’m looking for Apple to be Apple. Right now, it’s just like every other company in the living room; it’s content to have a presence but not dominate.

That needs to end.

No single company can stake claim to the living room right now. Steve Jobs just needs to take advantage of that void and do something special.

But first, he needs to take the living room — and its revenue potential — seriously.

With the company’s future already clouded by Steve Jobs’ latest medical leave, the possibility of the iPad’s chief designer, Jonathan Ive, cashing out ups the uncertainty, Dan Lyons writes.

Is Apple losing its design guru?

When Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced in January that he would take a third medical leave, the biggest concern was the cloud of uncertainty that hovered over the company. Now that uncertainty has become an issue again, as rumors have started swirling that Apple might lose its chief designer, Jonathan Ive.

Apple's head designer Jonathan Ive poses for a portrait on January 27, 2010 in Cupertino, California. (Photo by Paul Harris / Newscom)

Reports in Ive’s native England suggest that the man who oversaw the design of the iPhone and iPad wants to spend more time in the U.K., putting him at odds with Apple’s board enough that he would consider leaving the company. Although Ive and Apple won’t comment, the scenario is plausible for two reasons: First, Ive is about to cash in options valued at $30 million that he was granted in 2008; and second, Ive has an especially close relationship with Jobs.

Whether Ive stays or goes, the brouhaha shows the challenges that Apple is increasingly likely to face given the questions about Jobs’ role in the coming months. One scenario being bandied about by Apple-watchers suggests Ive is making a power play to succeed Jobs; it seems just as likely, however, that he simply may not want to work at Apple if Jobs isn’t there.

Still others think the entire notion that Ive might leave is completely unfounded. But either way, the whole incident shows how the Jobs health situation is bringing more drama to a company that, until now, has been a model of tight-lipped discipline.

Apple’s products are famous for their sleek designs, and conventional wisdom holds that losing Ive would be a terrible blow to Apple—“Apple’s worst nightmare,” Britain’s Guardian called it. But the truth is, losing Ive may not be as big a deal as some Apple watchers think.

For one thing, Apple has loads of bench strength in every department, and because of its success it can attract just about anyone it wants.

“How much of this is Steve, how much is Jon, how much someone else? Steve always had an eye for design. The designer is only as good as the client,” says Jean-Louis Gassée.

For another, the real genius behind Apple’s designs might not be Ive—but rather Jobs.

That’s the educated guess of Jean-Louis Gassée, a former top executive at Apple and a longtime close watcher of the company who still has many connections there.

Gassée points out that Ive was already working at Apple when Jobs returned to the company in 1996. Ive joined the company in 1992, when Jobs was gone from the company, having been ousted by the board in 1985.

And before Jobs returned to Apple, Ive wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire. The first products that Ive designed under Jobs were the “Bondi Blue” iMac and the somewhat ugly iBook. Ive’s next products, the "desk lamp" Mac and the early metal laptops, were better looking, Gassée says.

It looks like women have caught up with men in numbers in the workplace. For the first time in history, women in the USA now outnumber men in the workforce, and there are now more women in supervisory positions than there are males. The question is whether they will handle the downside of working any better than men.

According to an article by Ella L. J. Edmondson Bell, Ph.D., titled The 21st Century Workplace -- Are Women the New Men?, the economic downturn has hit men harder. They held nearly 80 percent of jobs that have been lost during what is now being called the "mancession." Will women now inherit the stress, pressure, exhaustion, burn out and heart attacks commonly associated with male leaders in business?

Some predict that this new female-dominated workplace will mean a softening of the corporate culture, with more benevolent leaders. Others foresee just the opposite. Ella says many women don't want to be seen as "soft" -- and others simply aren't. No one would call Carly Fiorina, the head of Hewlett Packard from 1999 to 2005, a wilting lily. According to her memoir, Tough Choices, she was sometimes referred to as Chainsaw Carly.

All of this is especially relevant on the entrepreneurial side, since statistics show that women are starting businesses at more than twice the rate of their male counterparts. Some would argue that the growing success rate of women entrepreneurs shows that they are resourceful, and better able to succeed, despite the odds.

While I'm sure we will continue to see progress on the female side, I predict that they will struggle with the same major challenges faced today by men. These include:

  1. Funding your dream. Raising money is hard, whether you are counting on friends, investors, or banks. I rarely see women at angel investment groups, either asking for money, or offering to fund new ventures. Men seem more focused on this one.

  2. Need for increased confidence and mindset skills. Many women and men are paralyzed by perfection, plagued by pessimism, and the need to satisfy others, rather than themselves. We need more women leaders.

  3. Motivation to succeed. Every entrepreneur needs to love what they do, and believe so strongly in their product or service that they can weather the tough times. On this one, it's easy to spot the ones with passion, from either gender.

  4. Manage time and priorities. Women, often more than men, try to do too much. It's hard to balance the continual demands of the business, personal relationships, and home life. Every entrepreneur needs to prioritize the important tasks ahead of urgent tasks.

  5. Never stop learning. After you start your business, the learning really begins. True entrepreneurs look at failures as their best learning experiences. Networking, and using your network is the next most important element of learning.

I don't see any challenges which are so gender specific that they can't be overcome by any entrepreneur. Yet I don't think women should be convinced that the battle for equality is almost over. There is still the question of why there are so few women in high places, and why the average income for women in business is about 68% of men's income.

What I am hoping is that women will not just be the new men, and suffer from the same maladies and limitations. I'll be looking for women to create the "new business culture" that every worker wants -- better role definitions, more effective and productive leadership, and better work-life balance. That would make women entrepreneurs the new women, rather than the new men!

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document that is 1200 x 1200 pixels, 72 dpi, and RGB Color. Fill the layer with white. (Ctrl+Backspace or Delete)

Step 2

Now create a rectangle for the header and fill it with a white-grey color, then use the colors on the image for the “Gradient Overlay”. Our search and logo will eventually be part of the header.

Step 3

Create a new rectangle above the previous one, with attributes as shown below. The following drop shadow effect creates a look of a 1 pixel stroke which does increase the look of that simple bar. Note: this step creates a horizontal line.

Step 4

Now add the “Gradient Overlay” layer style with the hex codes indicated.

Step 5

Add a white 1 pixel stroke. The following stroke of 1 pixel will divide the grey shadow effect. It’ll eventually work as a divider.

Step 6

Make one more rectangle in the middle-right zone, and fill it with white and add a 1 px stroke as indicated – it will be our search box.

Step 7

One more rectangle should be created and filled with blue. Set the inner shadow as indicated below, this will be our search button. This blue works great in combination with grey, white and light-grey. Blue will be the major contrasting color we use as we work through this template.

Step 8

Add the Gradient Overlay details to the button with the details from image.

Step 9

Add a 1 px stroke to the button with the color indicated. Take a look at the first and the final result of the button so you can see the difference all these details made.

Step 10

Now add this drop shadow effect for the text placed in the search box, using PT Sans Bold. This will be the final step in creating your search button. You may want to try other fonts, but the PT Sans Bold is really good for this small button.

Step 11

Make another fill under the header section, this will be the navigation area. Here we will place the navigation links of our template.

Step 12

Write your navigation links using a dark-grey color, then add a white “drop shadow” effect. The effect used for the navigation links is the same used for the search button.

Step 13

With 1px vertical line, make divisions between each links. The lines should be black and will really increase the beauty of the navigation area.

Step 14

Over the home section, make a fill with the blue and then add a Gradient Overlay style as indicated.

Step 15

Copy the Home link, this time color it white and add a drop shadow effect.

Step 16

Create a big, grey zone under the navigation, it should be about 30% of the layout. This will be the background for the featured area.

Step 17

Now create a big, white rectangle and add some shadow with the details shown. A big stock image, a big headline and some text with another great button will be added.

Step 18

Add a any dummy image you want to that featured area. Be sure it covers more than 80% of the area. The one I chose is from a stock website.

Step 19

Add some text to it, use the PT SANS Bold font and make the font big.

Step 20

The remaining area should be filled with grey, in it we’ll place some text. This is really a secondary area which describes the image, the services, the company itself, or whatever you’d like.

Step 21

Place some blue-colored text which will be the title of the information below. Use the details in the image for Drop Shadow style.

Step 22

Add some dummy text. This could be some important information or whatever you’d like.

Step 23

Create another grey area under the featured zone, where we will add some text and icons later. Add the details as stated on the image. Mostly, the icons will promote the services offered by the company behind the website.

Step 24

Continue by adding a Gradient Overlay style for the last rectangle we have created in the anterior steps.

Step 25

Now we are adding titles and icons, as well as some divisions. The icons can be found in the resource list at the beginning of the tutorial. Be sure to choose your icons and text thoughtfully.

Step 26

At the border of both zones, create a small circle and fill it with dark brown color. Add some inner shadow as stated on the image.

Step 27

Continue by adding a drop shadow layer style. It is another small detail, but it really makes that button zone minimalistic, nice-looking and well designed.

Step 28

To finish, add a Gradient Overlay effect.

Step 29

By using the Custom Shape Tool (U), create an arrow in both circles. Now add the details shown on the screenshot.

Step 30

Continue by adding some Color Overlay for the arrow. It should also be a blue color because otherwise, it will not fit the contrast and the colors used on the whole template.

Step 31

Add a video screenshot in the free space and place a title for it. For this template, I have used a simple screenshot of a YouTube widget.

Step 32

Add the text “Product Highlights” and “Case Studies.” Let the text under the “Product Highlights” be links so you could showcase some friends’ websites or resources you admire/promote.

Step 33

Finish it by creating another form for e-mails, place all kind of other information, and whatever you’d like.

Step 34

Don’t forget to make a relevant/small footer for our template. If you have paid attention, you should know how to create the same effect as below.

All done! If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to drop a comment. I hope you enjoyed this whole tutorial!

Making Money Web

Here’s that big funding round for Boxee I told you about last fall: The Web video software company has raised another $16.5 million. Previous investors General Catalyst, Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures are all back, joined by new money from Softbank and Israel’s Pitango.

Boxee, which makes software that makes it easier to get video from the Web to your TV, is a buzzy company in a buzzy industry. But I wrote about Boxee’s efforts to raise $10 million to $15 million back in November. What took so long?

My hunch is that in between then and now, the startup had to figure out if it really wanted to raise more money, or sell out to a big fish. For a long time, I figured the company was eventually headed for option B, and that a cable giant like Comcast or a box-maker like Cisco would be the buyer.

And that could still happen! But now the stakes have gotten a lot higher: Boxee has now raised $28.5 million, so in order to please its investors it’s going to need a significant payout.

Which means it really will have to build a real revenue stream, which it doesn’t have yet, and won’t have until it has a significant audience. As I wrote a few months ago:

Boxee’s real plan is both clear and a bit undefined: It wants to get its software on as many devices as possible–not just the Boxee Box but everything from Sony’s TVs to Microsoft’s Xbox 360s to Samsung’s Blu-ray players. And then it wants to build some kind of business based on advertising, consumer payments or both.

So Boxee isn’t trying to make money by licensing its software to hardware companies, any more than Netflix or Pandora is when they get their apps installed on different gadgets. It’s giving D-Link, the company that’s actually making the Boxee Box, its software for free. And it will do the same for other hardware companies.

Here’s a quick interview I conducted last fall with sleep-deprived CEO Avner Ronen, going over the same territory, back in November. Note that Ronen’s plans to bring Hulu Plus to the Boxee Box have yet to pan out. What’s up with that? “As you know these things take time,” he said via email yesterday. “But we are on it.”
